QLD:LNP hopeful stands aside over JFK email

By Evan Schwarten

CAIRNS, Aug 12 AAP - An LNP candidate has stepped aside as his party investigates an
email saying he hopes Prime Minister Julia Gillard "follows the history" of assassinated
US President John F Kennedy.

LNP state director Michael O'Dwyer on Friday evening confirmed the party's candidate
for the state seat of Cairns, Paul Freebody, had voluntarily stepped aside while the party
conducts an investigation into the email.

Mr Freebody denies writing the reference to President Kennedy, who was assassinated
in 1963, and claims the email which has been circulating in far north Queensland has been
doctored.

An email, obtained by AAP, shows Mr Freebody also labelled the Prime Minister "evil".

"I see Gillard and Brown as the most evil people we have ever had in power in our country,"

the email states.

"We can only hope that she follows the history of JFK."

The email was sent to dozens of recipients and appears to have been written in reply
to a circulating petition which criticises Rupert Murdoch's influence over the government.

However, Mr Freebody on Friday sent AAP a different version of the email with the letters
KMR, apparently a referring to Kevin Rudd, taking the place of the reference to JFK.

"Categorically, I never said that. I said she should get the same treatment she gave
Kevin Rudd," he said.

Two other recipients of the email have confirmed to AAP that they received the version
with the reference to "JFK" from Mr Freebody.

The LNP has declined to comment further on the matter.

IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker Reports Growth

IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker Reports Growth

WIRELESS NEWS-March 3, 2008-IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker Reports Growth (C)2008 10Meters - http://www.10meters.com

According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, factory revenue in the worldwide server market grew 2.4 percent year over year to $15.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2007 (4Q07), marking the seventh consecutive quarter of positive growth.
Worldwide server unit shipments grew 9.0 percent in 4Q07 when compared with the year-ago period. For the full year 2007, worldwide server revenue grew 3.6 percent to $54.4 billion, while worldwide unit shipments grew 6.7 percent to 8.0 million units. This represents the highest annual server revenue since the market peaked in 2000 with factory revenue of more than $61.6 billion.

Volume systems revenue grew 8.2 percent year over year and the segment continues to be the catalyst for growth in the server market overall, gaining favor with SMB and enterprise customers alike. Midrange enterprise server revenue experienced negative growth for the fourth consecutive quarter, declining 0.5 percent year over year while the high-end enterprise server market had similar results with 5.7 percent year-over-year revenue growth.

"Server demand remained strong across most major market segments in the fourth quarter driven by a continued shift towards modularization as customers expand and refresh their IT infrastructures while embracing blade computing as well as scale- out and scale-up server technologies," said Matthew Eastwood, group Vice President of IDC's Enterprise Platforms Group. "As the market continues to look for signs of an economic slowdown, spending for new IT projects could be impacted. However, IDC believes that recent gains in both system performance and manageability will continue to drive consolidation, virtualization and other infrastructure refresh projects where changing datacenter economics help CIOs build defensible business cases necessary for continued strategic IT investment."

Overall Server Market Standings, by Vendor

IBM held onto its number 1 spot in the worldwide server systems market with 36.7 percent market share in factory revenue for 4Q07, growing factory revenue by 0.5 percent year over year. This growth was driven by solid performance from its System x and System p servers. HP maintained the number 2 spot with 27.7 percent share for the quarter, growing revenue 6.3 percent compared to 4Q06. HP's growth stemmed from strong ProLiant and Integrity server performance. Dell and Sun ended the quarter in a statistical tie for third place with factory revenue market share of 10.1 percent and 9.3 percent respectively. Dell experienced 6.8 percent revenue growth compared with 4Q06, while Sun experienced a year-over-year revenue decline of 2.4 percent in 4Q07. Fujitsu/Fujitsu-Siemens, experienced a 7.1 percent increase in factory revenue holding 4.3 percent revenue share in 4Q07.

Top Server Market Findings

- Microsoft Windows servers showed positive growth as revenues grew 6.9 percent and unit shipments grew 9.8 percent year over year. Quarterly revenue of $5.7 billion for Microsoft Windows servers set an all-time high for a single quarter and represented the single largest revenue segment in the server market with 36.6 percent of overall quarterly factory revenue.

- Unix servers experienced 1.5 percent revenue growth year over year when compared with 4Q06. Worldwide Unix revenues were $5.2 billion for the quarter, representing 33.3 percent of quarterly server spending and reflecting continued IT investment in this server market segment, with particular strength in the midrange enterprise segment of the Unix market which comprises 53.8 percent of all Unix spending.

- Linux server revenue reached $2.0 billion for the first time in any single quarter on 11.6 percent year-over-year growth. Linux servers now represent 12.7 percent of all server revenue, up more than 1 point over 4Q06.

"Fourth quarter Unix market results were mainly driven by IBM's strong System p business as customers continue to support the Power RISC platform," said Steve Josselyn, research director, Enterprise Computing research at IDC. "IBM's Power RISC technology remains a driving force behind ongoing IT investment in Unix-based systems as they posted 0.9 percent point share gain in 4Q07 and a 2 percent point share increase in year-over-year comparisons for 2007."

"Growth in the top three operating-system segments of the server market, by revenue Windows, Unix and Linux underscores the diversity of the workloads that are running in customer sites, and the continuing demand for all three operating environments in the worldwide server marketplace," said Jean S. Bozman, research vice president, IDC Enterprise Computing Group. "All three environments compete for workloads in the Internet infrastructure, Web 2.0, high performance computing (HPC), and enterprise computing spaces."

x86 Industry Standard Server Market Dynamics

The x86 server market continued to grow in 4Q07, increasing 7.6 percent in the quarter to $7.8 billion in worldwide revenues. Unit shipment growth also accelerated, growing a healthy 10.3 percent year-over-year to 2.1 million servers as customers continued to refresh and expand their IT infrastructures. For the full year 2007, worldwide x86 server revenue grew 10.4 percent to $28.7 billion, while worldwide x86 unit shipments grew 8.3 percent to 7.6 million units.

HP outpaced the market in 4Q07, growing factory revenue 12.0 percent and gaining x86 market share in the process. HP led the market with 35.0 percent revenue share while IBM and Dell tied for second place with each vendor securing about 20 percent revenue share.

Bladed Server Market Shows Strong Shipment and Revenue Growth

Growth in the server blade market accelerated in the fourth quarter, with factory revenue gaining 54.2 percent year over year and shipments increasing by 35.6 percent compared to 4Q06. Overall, bladed servers, including x86, EPIC and RISC blades, accounted for $1.2 billion in the fourth quarter, representing 7.8 percent of quarterly server market revenue. More than 95 percent of all blade revenue is driven by x86 systems where blades now represent 14.8 percent of all x86 server revenue. For the full year 2007, worldwide blade server revenue grew 40.9 percent year over year to $3.9 billion.

HP maintained the number 1 spot in the server blade market in 4Q07 with 47.7 percent revenue share. IBM finished second with 32.5 percent revenue share.

"As the complexity and operational expenses of IT infrastructure continues to increase, a greater number of customers are turning to blade servers as a solution," said Jed Scaramella, senior research analyst, Enterprise Server research at IDC. "The integrated nature of the blade platform enables customers to solve energy and space challenges, as well as a way to improve the flexibility of their infrastructure."

WA: Teenager recovering after sea lion attack

PERTH, April 15 AAP - A 13-year-old girl is recovering in a Perth Hospital after being
mauled in an almost unheard of attack by a sea lion on a West Australian beach.

Ella Murphy was savaged by the sea lion on Friday as she was being towed on a surfboard
behind a speedboat at Lancelin, north of Perth.

Boat driver and family friend Chris Thomas said the animal attacked the teenager twice
before he was able to drag Ella to safety.

"The sea lion has come straight up at her on a collision course on the wave and leapt
out of the water and grabbed her on the head in its mouth," he told the Seven Network.

Ella underwent emergency surgery yesterday after the sea lion left her with significant
injuries to her jaw.

"She's got a huge hole underneath her chin here, she's lost three teeth and quite
a severe amount of bone," mother Michelle Forbes said.

However, her injuries could have been far more serious, the sea lion's bite reportedly
missed a vital artery by just one millimetre.

Her father, Martin Guggenheimer, said Ella was lucky to have survived the attack.

"You nearly get eaten by a wild animal like that ... and they think she could have
been, you know she's very lucky to be alive," he said.

Ella's Doctors have also expressed amazement that her jaw wasn't broken in the attack
while her braces have been credited with saving many of her teeth.

Fasthosts finds 49% of SMEs do not submit websites to search engines

Internet Business News
03-03-2006
Research conducted by Fasthosts, an independent hosting company in the UK, has found that 49% of the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) questioned in January and February 2006 do not submit their websites to search engines.

Fasthosts asked the SMEs about search engine practices, favoured search engines and attitudes towards sponsored links and found that 66% of Internet users and potential customers only view the first two pages of search engine results. This means that many small businesses may not be found online, which Fasthosts claimed will result in lost revenue for every day the business is not visible on the Internet.

Consumers in the UK spent GBP19.2bn online in 2005 on goods and services and the figure is expected to increase 36% this year. Some 89% of respondents reported using Google as their first choice of search engine, while 30% said they never click on sponsored links and Fasthosts said companies need to ensure a high listing within the natural results on the left hand side of the screen.

Fasthosts provides a free search engine submission service with its business web hosting package, through TrafficDriver, including a site creation tool and automated monthly search engine submissions.

Analysis: Reaction in London to today's bombings

Host: ROBERT SIEGEL
Time: 8:00-9:00 PM

ROBERT SIEGEL, host:

From NPR News, this is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. I'm Robert Siegel.

We continue our coverage of the explosions in London today. The four blasts--three on subway trains, one on a a double-decker bus--killed dozens of people and wounded more than 700. Thousands of morning commuters were evacuated from London's Tube train and bus systems. Tonight some of those remain closed. Commuters were trying to make their way home any way they could.

Ross and Kerry Ann Murray(ph) are brother and sister who work as consultants in London's financial district, and they met up for what they guessed would be a four-hour walk home. Their route took them past the site of one of the explosions.

Mr. ROSS MURRAY (Consultant, London's Financial District): And we came past Tavistock Square and saw all the back of the lineup this morning. It's all cordoned off, and it's pretty grim. They said at about lunchtime that if we wanted to go, we could, but they advised us to stay. And we've been walking for about two hours, I think.

Ms. KERRY ANN MURRAY (Consultant, London's Financial District): When we heard this stuff had happened, we kind of guessed something was up. Pretty much just kept glued to the Internet and the news stations, just checking everything out and just trying to figure out what to do next, how the hell to get out of the city, 'cause, I mean, it's not a very safe place to be at the moment. And I must admit this morning when I got on the Tube, that's the last thing you think about. And I also got off about eight minutes before the blast happened. So we're pretty much lucky that, you know, nothing happened to us, but I just feel sorry for the people that it has happened to.

SIEGEL: The Underground was closed, but many buses and some above-ground commuter trains were running. Glen Matthews(ph) hoped to catch one of those trains.

Mr. GLEN MATTHEWS (London Commuter): Well, I'm going to Paddington, and hopefully I'll catch the overland, which should be about 20, 25 minutes on an ordinary--20 minutes on an ordinary day. I don't know which train I'll get, whether it'll be the first train or the last train, but I'll get a train. And tomorrow I'll try my best to come in, but I'm pretty certain they will be very accommodating if I make it in, but I'll try my best to come.

SIEGEL: As most Londoners tried to get home, a 94-year-old Red Cross volunteer tried to get to a hospital. Marilyn Benemen(ph) drove an ambulance in London during World War II. Today she walked to St. Mary's Hospital, where she tended to victims of the Edgware Road explosion.

Ms. MARILYN BENEMEN (Red Cross Volunteer): Oh, when you're Red Cross, you're expected to do it. Oh, yes, if you're in walking distance, I think you should turn up. And long as you can just sooth people down and an extra cup of tea, a spot of tea, yes--it's a wicked, wicked thing, though. You say, `Well, the world's got to go on. Everything's got to go on. You can't give in to these things.' And so one presses on.

He was the son of missionaries working in Syria, then part of the Ottoman Empire, who returned to America in 1885. Adams graduated from Dartmouth College in 1898 and obtained his AM from the University of Chicago in 1900. After a year in Munich he began his career in astronomy as assistant to George Hale in 1901 at the Yerkes Observatory. He moved with Hale to the newly established Mount Wilson Observatory in 1904 where he served as assistant director, 1913–23, and then as director from 1923 until his retirement in 1946.

At Mount Wilson Adams was able to use first the 60-inch (1.5-m) and from 1917 the 100-inch (2.5-m) reflecting telescopes in whose design and construction he had been closely associated. His early work was mainly concerned with solar spectroscopy, when he studied sunspots and solar rotation, but he gradually turned to stellar spectroscopy. In 1914 he showed how it was possible to distinguish between a dwarf and a giant star merely from their spectra. He also demonstrated that it was possible to determine the luminosity, i.e. intrinsic brightness, of a star from its spectrum. This led to Adams introducing the method of spectroscopic parallax whereby the luminosity deduced from a star's spectrum could be used to estimate its distance. The distance of many thousands of stars have been calculated by this method.

He is however better known for his work on the orbiting companion of Sirius, named Sirius B. Friedrich Bessel had first shown in 1844 that Sirius must have a companion and had worked out its mass as about the same as our Sun. The faint star was first observed telescopically by Alvan Clark in 1862. Adams succeeded in obtaining the spectrum of Sirius B in 1915 and found the star to be considerably hotter than the Sun. He realized that such a hot body, just eight light-years distant, could only remain invisible to the naked eye if it was very much smaller than the Sun, no bigger in fact than the Earth. In that case it must have an extremely high density, exceeding 100,000 times the density of water. Adams had thus discovered the first ‘white dwarf’ – a star that has collapsed into a highly compressed object after its nuclear fuel is exhausted.

If such an interpretation was correct then Sirius B should possess a very strong gravitational field. According to Einstein's general theory of relativity, this strong field should shift the wavelengths, of light waves emitted by it toward the red end of the spectrum. In 1924 Adams succeeded in making the difficult spectroscopic observations and did in fact detect the predicted red shift, which confirmed his own account of Sirius B and provided strong evidence for general relativity.

Click Consult Reviews JJB Sports Digital Marketing Case Study.

(PRWEB) June 19, 2011

Cheshire-based internet marketing agency, Click Consult, have published a review of the work they conducted for one of their most high profile clients.

The review was focused on JJB Sports, one of the UK's largest providers of sportswear and equipment. Click Consult, who specialise in a range of digital marketing disciplines, helped JJB Sports embark on a successful paid advertising campaign (PPC) over an extended period of time.

Click Consult began working with JJB Sports in 2009 and their PPC campaign was devised and implemented within a pre-agreed remit. Click Consult also had to work closely to a strict ROI that JJB Sports set for their online marketing campaigns to ensure the efficiency of targeted keywords.

The figures published in the case study reveal that revenue increased by 110.39% during the first year of the project. Improved keyword targeting ensured that click-through rates rose by 62.7%, and in the first three months of the project, JJB Sports saw an overall growth of 192% in ROI.

"Click Consult are passionate and determined about making a success story of every client we help with their digital marketing campaigns. JJB Sports was one of our biggest success stories, and the production of this case study not only reflects positively on Click Consult, but also on the hard work done by JJB Sports," said Matt Bullas, Managing Director of Click Consult. "In this particular review, the focus was on our team of PPC experts, but our other services such as, web development, conversion rate optimisation and search engine optimisation, also produce consistently high levels of success for our clients. Our case studies really show how internet marketing has the potential to help companies buck the economic trend and we intend to keep producing similar success stories."

GOOGLE TO BUILD NEW RESEARCH CENTER IN TAIWAN FOR CHROME OS.

TAIPEI, June 1 Asia Pulse - U.S.-based Google Inc. announced Tuesday it will build a research and development center in Taiwan for its Chrome operating system exclusively, as part of the search giant's effort to promote the emerging platform in business and educational markets.

Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome at Google, said Google will expand its manpower in the R&D center in Taipei by hiring more local engineers to build a new operating ecosystem with Taiwan's original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs).

The mission of the new center will be different from the traditional notebook manufacturing model, as the members in the center will discuss product features and details with Google's global Chrome OS team, he said.

Pichai made the remarks at the company's press conference at Computex Taipei, the world's No. 2 computer technology fair behind Germany's CeBIT.

Chrome OS, which originates from the web-based Chrome browser, provides users with a faster and easier access to the Internet on a variety of devices, said Pichai. But Google so far does not have any plans to use the OS on tablet PCs.

As the number of users of Google's Chrome browser has increased from 70 million to 160 million during the past two years, the company plans to launch Chrome-based notebook computers, or Chromebooks, in the middle of June.

The 12.1-inch Chromebook, branded under Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE:005930), will go on sale in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy.

The smaller Chromebook, sizing 11.6 inches and bearing the logo of Acer Inc. (TAIEX:2353), does not have a rollout schedule yet.

Still, Acer and Google have already agreed on the prices. The Wi-Fi version of the Chromebook will start at US$349 (NT$9,995) in the United States, while the 3G version will be tagged at US$429.

The newly unveiled device can also be rented in the business market with a monthly fee of US$28 per user, while its monthly rental price in the educational market is lower at US$20 per user, Pichai said.

All Eyes On The Cookie Jar.

Further to our previous e-update (please click here), anyone with a website should be aware of the new EU rules (Directive 2009/136/EC) regarding the use of internet text-files called 'cookies'. The UK will implement the Directive on the 26 May this year, imposing strict rules on website providers on the way in which cookies are used.

This week the Information Commissioner's Office published advice for the benefit of organisations which sets out the steps that they need to take to ensure that they comply with the new EU Rules.

From the 26 May, website providers will need to receive explicit consent from users in order to store cookies on website users' devices so that the website can recognise the user's device in future. The ICO have produced a non-exhaustive list of methods of obtaining consent, providing a stepping stone for businesses preparing for the new rules.

Under the Directive, web-users will need to 'opt-in' to the storage of data using cookies and there will be a requirement for users to be fully informed as to the content and extent of the information which is going to be stored. In order for the web-user to be fully informed, the cookie consent boxes will need to be easily accessible and highly visible. Therefore, we should expect to see many more pop-up boxes on our screens.

According to the Government's recent consultation response, "through clicking on the icon, the consumer will be informed about: each specific internet advert; the advertiser; the server; who the advert was customised by; and an option to refuse those and other cookies (including an option to refuse all cookies from that server)".

The only exception to the new rules will be where the user information is 'strictly necessary' for the service provided by the website. The Information Commissioner has advised that the application of this exception will be quite limited in practice and the use of cookies must be directly related to the service provided by the website i.e. for online shopping, the use of cookies will be 'strictly necessary' for the site to 'remember' what is in your shopping basket.

So what are the essential steps to be taken according to the ICO?

1. Web providers need to check what cookies are currently used by carrying out a website audit or checking what data is placed on the user's computer. This should be followed up with an analysis of whether the information gathered is 'strictly necessary' and whether it is gathered by informed consent.

2. Check how intrusive the cookies are to the individual's privacy. If the information gathered creates a detailed browsing profile, more comprehensive consent methods may need to be adopted.

3. Decide how consent will be obtained i.e. through pop-ups, terms and conditions when entering the website, or scrolling text footers or by some other method.

Christopher Graham, the Information Commissioner, has recognised that many businesses rely on the use of cookies for legitimate business reasons, and although the advice published this week provides some guidance, it is only a work in progress and does not provide all the answers on compliance. Graham has stated that he will work proactively with the Government, businesses and the public sector to find a practical solution that 'reflects real world practice'.

With the new rules coming into force in less than 3 weeks, businesses should be giving immediate consideration as to how they will ensure compliance with the new EU rules and communicate effectively with their website users about the use of cookies and the storage of cookie data.

Brazil, Aug 1, 2003 (Gazeta Mercantil/SABI via COMTEX)

The Brazilian power distribution company AES Eletropaulo is testing the electric Internet project, named PLC (powerline communication) or broadband over powerline, and completes a feasibility study to know what kind of advantages the technology can bring. The Spanish DS2, through its subsidiary EBA, is the technology partner of Eletropaulo. The company is studying a way to reduce the high cost of the system, since the whole equipment is imported. As an example, a ten-floor building would demand the set up of a central modem, estimated in between US$1,800mil and US$2,000, besides equipment in each floor, for between US$320 and US$350 each.

Brazil Has the First Newspaper Exclusively for the iPad.

Brasil247 launches a new business model for the editorial market

SAO PAULO, March 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Brazil gets a glimpse of its first media interface developed specially for the iPad: Brazil247 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). It is a new free medium providing content that is open, shareable and editable in a creative, collaborative and light-hearted approach.

The new newspaper offers information and entertainment with interaction, plurality, agility and democracy (the iPad 's initials): Interactivity - Its content is 100% open, to be shared, Plurality - A collaborative work model, open to readers (journalists or otherwise) to write, Agility - At least two daily editions, and Democracy - Columnists from every walk of life.

With investments of more than US$ 2 million in one year, Brazil247 was designed to meet the new readership demand of the Brazilian market, which already has 200 thousand tablet users, with the potential to grow to more than 1 million this year. The project is from Editora247, commandeered by experienced journalists and directed by Leonardo Attuch and Joaquim Castanheira, esteemed professionals in Brazilian journalism.

The idea for the newspaper arose from the journalist's own experiences in reading international publications and using tablets. "The American newspaper Daily gave us the confidence that we were on the right track," says Leonardo Attuch, emphasizing that these devices finally brought portability to the reader and should accelerate the migration from paper to digital media. "Brasil247 is not an adaptation of a printed edition. It was created to specifically take advantage of the technological resources available on the iPad platform, like videos, photo galleries and animation," says Joaquim Castanheira.

The publication antedates technological, cultural, societal and environmental trends by being an open, free, collaborative, freely accessible newspaper that is controlled by journalists and has no printed editions. In addition to the traditional sections, the newspaper has editorials in Personal Finances, Agribusiness, Media & Technology, Games & Applications, Ecology and Photography. On weekends, the readers are offered the Oasis magazine, focused on quality of life, style and traveling. The new publication will begin publicity campaigns from companies like Caoa/Hyundai, Tecnisa and SEB - Sistema Educacional Brasil.

Brasil247 can be access through Apple's iTunes Store (Brasil247 App and Revista Oasis) or through the internet: www.brasil247.com.br

BUFFETT'S BERKSHIRE TO ENTER INDIA; TIES UP WITH BAJAJ ALLIANZ.

NEW DELHI, March 3 Asia Pulse - Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate led by billionaire Warren Buffett, on Wednesday said it plans to enter the Indian non-life insurance sector as a corporate agent of leading player Bajaj Allianz General.

The move would mark the foray of Berkshire Hathaway's direct entry into the Indian market, where the billionaire investor Buffett is yet to make substantial investments.

As part of its planned India entry, the US conglomerate has incorporated Berkshire India to sell and distribute general insurance products in India.

Berkshire India would directly sell insurance to consumers through the portal 'www.berkshireinsurance.com' and by way of telemarketing, it said in a statement.

Initially, the focus would be on motor insurance but the company would continuously update its business model.

"If the market proves receptive, the Company will seek to expand its products to include health insurance, life and travel insurance and other personal lines, as well," it noted.

Berkshire Hathaway is a sprawling US conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway that is into various businesses, including property and casualty insurance and reinsurance, finance, manufacturing, and retailing.

It has significant stakes in global majors, including Coca-Cola and Kraft, that also have a strong presence in India.

Berkshire India CEO Arun Balakrishnan said that his company and Bajaj Allianz share a common goal of providing exemplary customer service.

"We have been watching the Indian insurance industry for a long time and are very excited about the immense opportunity in the emerging retail insurance sector," Berkshire India's Director Kara Raiguel said.

Berkshire Hathaway has been very successful in the online and direct distribution model in the US and we would like to replicate that success in India as well, he added.

According to him, buying financial products directly over the Internet is a relatively new and growing opportunity in India.

Gold ATM atm gives gold.

DUBAI An ATM that spits out pure gold nuggets and coins has become such a hit among shoppers that one vendor has had to organise

twice-a-week replenishment.

Simon Khoury, chief operating officer of the Galeries Lafayette at Dubai Mall, said sales of their gold-to-go

machine have beaten expectations, though he declined to give figures.

The golden box coughing up 99.9 per cent gold has become a novel

curiosity to most mall-goers, but there are some who find it no different from buying a can of soda. Georgina Hardman, from the UK, said:

"It's a good idea and my husband would have bought a piece, except that he was short on cash. And it does not accept credit cards."

The machine works just like an ATM-cum-vending machine: you put money inside, get your purchase in a package and off you go - it takes all of 20

seconds.

What's the guarantee of authenticity of the gold sold? Items are only made with 24-carat gold supplied by a Swiss banker.

10-day return policy

The items, which come in a sealed box, can be returned within 10 days after purchase.

"We just made gold

purchases more accessible," said Khoury. "Our clients understood this idea very well and most of them make up their mind in a few

seconds."

Currently, payment is only in dirhams and Khoury said payment by credit or debit card will be sorted in a few days. "We

have no big demand from people paying in dollars or other currencies. We're hoping to finalise a deal in 10 days to allow us to take credit card

payments for gold-to-go purchases," he said.

The smallest nugget weighs 2.5 grams and cost Dh565 on Tuesday (Dh470 on February 11, the

launch date) while the biggest sold so far was a one-ounce coin for Dh5,540 on the same day.

Prices change and are updated via the internet

every 10 minutes. Khoury said all sales are monitored by security cameras. "There are several cameras inside and outside the machine."

A customer facing trouble with the machine can push an emergency button for help.

There are about 50 such machines around the world,

including one each at the entrance of Burj Khalifa and the At The Top viewing platform on the 124th floor. Another gold-to-go is installed at the

Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

K3 Launches New SaaS Solution to Quench Thirst for Pay as You Use ERP.

(PRWeb UK) February 18, 2011

The company's SYSPRO BusinessLive ERP offering is provided as Software as a Solution (SaaS), enabling customers to take advantage of a powerful and flexible computer system without the need for up-front investment or on-site installation and maintenance. Customers will find that the system pays for itself through efficiency gains as they use it.

Research by the technology analyst firm, Aberdeen Group found that 39% of respondents to a recent survey would consider deploying SaaS ERP -- an increase of 70% on the previous year.1 Users recognise that such cloud based systems provide huge benefits by giving them the ability to use state of the art technology that is hosted and maintained by the software company. They have no need to worry about updates and data security as this is part of the service.

SYSPRO BusinessLive also allows scaleability for growth, flexibility to adapt to business change and easy deployment for new users and sites. The system is inherently secure due to K3's mirrored state of the art hosting systems and it provides business continuity and disaster recovery features. If a company needs to relocate to a temporary site or staff need to work from home, the system remains accessible at all times.

Aberdeen finds that the "cloud offering includes the full functionality of the SYSPRO ERP application; there is no difference in the software between the on-premise version and SYSPRO BusinessLive."2 The secure web-based application enables users to access their ERP system on demand over the Internet or through a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

"SYSPRO BusinessLive gives companies the opportunity to implement advanced software without the associated costs of on-site installations. When companies are working hard to move forward, but still feeling the effect of the recession, it means that they can take advantage of powerful technology without impacting their finances," said Andy Latham Managing Director, K3 Business Technology Group.

Microsoft Delivers Online Encrypted E-mail Using Direct Project Security Protocols.

Interoperable e-mail messaging service launched with new version of Microsoft HealthVault enables physicians to share patient health information electronically.

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- During a Health & Human Services event in D.C. today, Microsoft Corp. announced new encrypted e-mail functionality for Microsoft HealthVault, which allows clinical partner solutions to send messages to patients based on security protocols set forth by the Office of the National Coordinator's (ONC's) Direct Project. Through this offering, every HealthVault record will be able to automatically accept mails directly from healthcare providers. Initial partners include MedPlus and VisionShare Inc., which have integrated the new service with their solutions to help clinical users secure messages they send to patients. The three companies are pioneering members of the Direct Project and will demonstrate the capabilities of their solutions in the Interoperability Showcase at the 2011 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibit (HIMSS 2011) as part of the Office of the National Coordinator's exhibit.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

"The initial goal of the Direct Project is to specify a simple, secure, scalable, standards-based way for participants to send authenticated, encrypted health information directly to known, trusted recipients over the Internet," said Wes Rishel, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner. "It is exciting to see early, real-world examples of applications based on the Direct Project's security protocols emerging through the efforts of the private sector. Through public-private partnerships such as these we are starting to see the sharing of critical information across the health system."

Through this functionality, an encrypted copy of an individual's clinical information can be electronically transmitted to a patient's new e-mail address created within Microsoft HealthVault, where it is automatically saved to the patient's HealthVault account as part of their longitudinal personal health record. The service may be used to read or download the information. Direct Project messaging with security-enhanced technologies enables clinical solution providers to meet Phase One Meaningful Use requirements for the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program by providing patients with their health information, as well as proposed Phase Two requirements, which call for secure online patient messaging.

"Through the Direct Project, and our work with Microsoft HealthVault, Quest Diagnostics Care360(TM) EHR is providing the physician community with an effective way to transmit comprehensive clinical information directly to patients and to realize the financial incentives of achieving meaningful use," said Richard A. Mahoney, Quest Diagnostics vice president of Healthcare Information Solutions and president of its MedPlus healthcare information technology subsidiary. "With Care360 EHR, physicians can securely and easily collaborate and share information with the goal of improving patient care."

ONC's Direct Project says it benefits providers and patients by improving the direct transport of structured and unstructured health information, making it secure, fast, inexpensive, and, for some applications, interoperable. Using Direct Project addresses, a care provider can send and receive important clinical information, connecting to other stakeholders across the country.

"This service and our early partnerships are accelerating the ability for patients to become active participants in managing their health," said Sean Nolan, distinguished engineer and chief architect, Microsoft Health Solutions Group. "As one of the first examples of the Direct Project security protocols being utilized to meet Meaningful Use requirements, this interoperability is a step on the road map to the goal of expanding secure online interactions between physicians and patients."

Microsoft is also working with VisionShare, a leader in e-health connectivity, to advance the goals of the Direct Project. Both companies are participating in a Direct Project Pilot Implementation to demonstrate the feasibility of using the Direct Project communication protocols, security model and addressing mechanism to submit immunization data from providers into a state immunization information system with security-enhanced technologies. Information on the pilot, which began sending data on Jan. 12, will be available after the completion of the program.

Demonstrations of Microsoft HealthVault encrypted e-mail can be seen in scenarios presented by MedPlus and VisionShare at the Interoperability Showcase during HIMSS 2011 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 20-24.
