WA: Cross Aust cyclists to raise money for deaf
A group of cyclists will today embark on a gruelling trip from Perth to Sydney in a
bid to raise $160,000 for Australia's deaf.
The 31 cyclists will ride about 170 kilometres a day to make it to Sydney in time for
the Olympics.
The longest day will see them cover 216 kilometres.
Coordinator JAN COGGINS says the cyclists are fit and raring to go after 18 months of training.
The cyclists will stay in churches and billets in the 28 towns and cities they'll visit
on their trip.

Vic: Police harass students over flag burning
Police in Melbourne have been accused of abusing their powers and harassing students
in connection with the burning of an Indonesian flag at a protest rally.
Six members of a group called University Students for East Timor face charges ranging
from criminal damage to arson over the incident, involving a flag stolen from the city's
Indonesian consulate.
Lawyer MARCUS CLAYTON, who's representing the six, says Victoria Police's Protective
Security Intelligence Group tracked down and questioned the students several weeks after
the protest in September.
Mr CLAYTON says the police's use of resources in the case has been "grossly inappropriate".
He says the students had only expressed their anger and outrage over the horror in
East Timor in a symbolic protest.
The civil rights group, Liberty Victoria, has also criticised police over the matter.
Its president, FELICITY HAMPEL QC, says officers have intimidated the students by giving
them the impression the authorities are keeping tabs on them.
Ms HAMPEL says such action by the police is a form of stopping people engaging in
lawful, political protest.

FED: Colston vote important to unfair dismissal laws
CANBERRA, Feb 15 AAP - Independent Queensland MP Mal Colston's vote will be critical when
the Senate decides this week whether to overturn the government's new unfair dismissal
regulations for small business.
All other parties and independents are firmly opposed to the new regulation which means new
workers at firms with a maximum of 15 employees will have no redress under federal laws if
they believe they have been unfairly dismissed.
Last week a spokesman for Senator Colston would not confirm whether he would vote against
the changes.
The Senate's other independent, Senator Brian Harradine, today joined Labor, the Australian
Democrats and the Greens in firmly opposing the measure which is expected to come up in Senate
business today.
Workplace Relations Minister Peter Reith effectively bypassed parliament just before
Christmas by imposing the changes as a regulation after the legislation was twice rejected by
the Senate.
Senator Harradine told reporters today Mr Reith's move was one of the issues which angered
him.
"This is just part of a plan by Peter Reith to treat workers simply as units of production
without representation and without protection and you don't expect me to go along with that
...
"Furthermore, to do what he has done and that is put through a regulation, trying to
enforce a regulation when the parliament has already rejected the bill is a smart alec
approach... it is an unparliamentary approach to a parliamentary democracy."
Democrats Leader Meg Lees said Mr Reith was pushing the regulation even though he had not
made it clear to small business that the government's major workplace legislation had
significantly changed the industrial scene in regard to unfair dismissal.
She said it was unfortunate that surveys, which showed there was still concern among
business groups about the measure, were done when businesses did not have information on the
changes which had occurred.
"I call on Mr Reith to give us evidence of where he has actually gone out to small
business, gone out to the community and told them of the changes we have already made to
unfair dismissal," Senator Lees said.
She said Senator Colston had supported the Senate when it voted down the measure.
"Senator Colston has said in the past that not only is he concerned about the issue but he
is also concerned about the way in which the minister went behind the Senate's back to do it,"
she said.
"So we are reasonably confident (of his vote) as confident as we can be," Senator Lees
said.

FED:Employer groups sexist: ACTU
ACTU president GED KEARNEY has accused mean-spirited employer groups who've attacked
the pay rise for community sector workers of being sexist.
Ms KEARNEY's accused business groups of clinging to outdated ideas that devalue the
role of women in the workforce.
About 150 thousand community sector workers across the country, mostly women, were
yesterday awarded a pay rise by Fair Work Australia in a landmark test case.
But the move hasn't been welcomed by all sectors of the community.
Ms KEARNEY says employer groups are acting as if the sky's falling in and accused them
of scare mongering over concerns the decision will lead to fresh claims in other sectors.
