TROY - Rensselaer County Legislature Republicans and Democrats are sparring over the proposed 2008 county budget that will be the subject of a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. today.

County Executive Kathleen Jimino, a Republican, proposed a $280.4 million budget that carries a 5 percent tax increase for property owners.

The Republican majority is backing Jimino's proposed budget and tax increase. The Democratic minority maintains budget cuts could eliminate the need for a tax increase.

As of Tuesday, there were still 57 tax delinquent properties slated to go to auction Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the county facilities building.

Property owners have until the day of the auction to pay their back taxes and remove their properties from the auction block. All sales will be considered for approval by the Board of Supervisors at its regular meeting on April 20.

Apr. 21--BankThai expects to secure a new foreign strategic partner by the end of the year, bank president Phirasilp Subhapolsiri said.

He said new equity would be issued to give the new partner a minority shareholding in the bank.

But any deal would come only after the bank finalises profits or losses for the covered asset pool with bank regulators, a process which is expected to be resolved over the next several months.

The covered asset pool, which expired in 2005, included assets of 115 billion baht managed by BankThai for the Financial Institutions Development Fund.
