Fasthosts finds 49% of SMEs do not submit websites to search engines

Research conducted by Fasthosts, an independent hosting company in the UK, has found that 49% of the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) questioned in January and February 2006 do not submit their websites to search engines.

Fasthosts asked the SMEs about search engine practices, favoured search engines and attitudes towards sponsored links and found that 66% of Internet users and potential customers only view the first two pages of search engine results. This means that many small businesses may not be found online, which Fasthosts claimed will result in lost revenue for every day the business is not visible on the Internet.

Consumers in the UK spent GBP19.2bn online in 2005 on goods and services and the figure is expected to increase 36% this year. Some 89% of respondents reported using Google as their first choice of search engine, while 30% said they never click on sponsored links and Fasthosts said companies need to ensure a high listing within the natural results on the left hand side of the screen.

Fasthosts provides a free search engine submission service with its business web hosting package, through TrafficDriver, including a site creation tool and automated monthly search engine submissions.
