Fed: Nauru govt imprisoning asylum seekers, not Australia

MELBOURNE, Jan 15 AAP - The Nauruan government, not Australia, was detaining almost
300 asylum seekers on the island nation, a barrister for the federal government told the
Victorian Supreme Court today.

The argument is in response to a writ claiming the 290 detainees were unlawfully imprisoned.

It seeks their release and claims unspecified damages on their behalf.
