QLD:Evacuation centres full: Cairns council

BRISBANE, Feb 2 AAP - Cairns residents have been told all of the city's cyclone shelters
are full and they must seek refuge in homes and other accommodation in the safest parts
of the city.

"Some areas are already experiencing strong wind gusts up to 125km/h which will increase
throughout the afternoon and evening," Cairns Regional Council said in a statement.

"Travelling by vehicle or on foot is unsafe.

"All evacuation centres are full and residents are urged to stay where they are now
for the next 24 hours."

Category five Cyclone Yasi is on track to make landfall between Innisfail and Cardwell
around 10pm (AEST) on Wednesday, with authorities confident they have the site within
a 30km range of accuracy.

It's packing winds of almost 300km/h and is expected to send potentially deadly storm
surges into coastal communities including Cairns and Townsville.
